Fellows Spotlight: Tasfia Howlader
Meet Tasfia Howlader, 2021 Nyah Fellow and College Academy at Broward College senior — go class of 2023!
Although she’s still in high school, Tasfia started her own non-profit organization, Amader Shopno, Inc. (“Our Dream”), originally to support educational opportunities for marginalized girls in her parents’ native Bangladesh by providing access to uniforms and books for school. Since her Nyah Project fellowship experience in Ghana, she broadened the mission to empower students across the globe through education.
After her experience in Ghana and seeing how our impact partner organization, the Human Factor Leadership Academy (HFLA), suffered from unexpected flooding that destroyed most of the K-6 classrooms’ electrical wiring and materials, Tasfia was eager to identify solutions to help with recovery efforts. She spoke with HFLA’s founding director, Dr. Senyo Adjibolosoo, and decided to organize a book and resource drive to send much needed resources to HFLA, whilst sharing about her experiences and advocating for the community she befriended in rural Ghana. Similarly, when the earthquakes in Turkey and Syria hit earlier this year and impacted millions of people, she mobilized her peers and network in South Florida to gather and send recovery supplies to the frontlines.
Through Amader Shopno, Tasfia also hosts monthly virtual discussions to engage other high school students and have them share their perspectives on different educational issues.
As a dual enrollment student, Tasfia will graduate with both her high school diploma and Associate in Arts (AA) degree this spring before heading to Nova Southeastern University in the fall where she will major in Management with a minor in Political Science.
